Impala Start of Season Squash Tournament 2017

The Start of Season squash tournament, which is an annual event that has been held at Impala Sports Club for the last almost 15 years, took an up twist this year with a record entry of about 60 players, with almost 20 ladies. We had many new faces this year who came from as far wide as the UK, New Zealand, neighboring East African countries and regional counties like Mombasa and Nyeri.

The Impala courts had been well prepared for the tournament together with full time refreshments. Many players were here to learn from one another, interact and compete as a tournament usually. From the first day the atmosphere was electric with most players eager to go into court or referee.

Very exciting matches were witnessed from the first round of 64 to the last round and had interesting upsets such as the higher seeded Nick being beaten by Joram Okwaro who plays at Impala Club, Moses Mureithi beating Phillip Oruoch with both games going to the wire at 3-2.

The ladies so many new faces with the likes of Emma Phillips from New Zealand, Yvone Wangu, Jane Nidhamu, Caroline Nyaguthi, Alexandra Krank amongst others who came to try and overthrow the veterans such as Safina Madhani, Violet Luchendo, Maureen Macharia and Elizabeth Mulwa. The ladies event was very entertaining with most matches going to the wire up and including the finals between Safina Madhani and Elizabeth Mulwa. Madhani succumbed to a narrow 3-2 defeat to Elizabeth Mulwa who for the first time beat Safina in a very competitive match.

The main event was a showcase of young versus old, experience versus fitness, fitness versus unfitness and many other aspects in squash. New stars featured like Ashton Guto who beat fellow compatriot from Malawi Kelvin Storey 3-0 in the round of sixteen to later be floored by James Dalidi in the quarters, Bruce Jusa run over Tauseef Khan, Hartaj Bains beat Abubakr Chaudry 3-0 and Leon Keya beat Hussein Moiz 3-0 to set up tantalizing semi finals between Leon and Bruce, and Hartaj and James Dalidi.

In the Semi-finals, Hartaj was given a rude welcome by James who took the first game, only for Hartaj to change the architecture of the match and took the next three games to win 3-1. Leon on the other hand had to really struggle against the upcoming, elastic Bruce Jusa but managed to overcome the pressure and win 3-1 to set up a final with Hartaj Bains. Hartaj proved the better of the two after showing his unorthodox left hand skills together with amplified fitness to overcome the less experienced Leon Keya who looked like had been struck by lightning, 3-1.

All in all this was a wonderful event staged by the able hands of Impala team that Consisted of Wanja Gikonyo, Steve Kabii, Bilha and Mwangi Karina and the KSRA team that consisted of Tauseef Khan, Jimmi Sohail, Sanaa and Elizabeth Mulwa among others.
